Annual Sustainability Statement 2011-12

About this report

MMU is one of the region's major economic contributors, with 33,000 students and 3,000 staff we have a responsibility to ensure that our activities do not create adverse environmental impacts. Our responsibilityis to have sustainably informed staff, students and graduates, who can articulate and apply their knowledge and skills in the transition to a low carbon society. Environmental sustainability is one of MMU's key priorities, alongside graduate employability, and the University is building a credible and deliverable environmental sustainability programme.
Over the last 5 years, the University’s environmental impacts have been tracked through Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).   In addition, we have seen growing expectation on the ability to report this data publically.  Over the last few months, we have reviewed our policy, set new targets to be implemented through a new environmental strategy, and associated ownership of University implementation plans.
In this year's statement, we have  taken an approach to rename some of our policy areas:
  • Sustainability in the Curriculum has changed to Learning for a Sustainable Future, which places more emphasis on the association of sustainability in the direction of learning, skills and employability.
  • Communication has changed to Sustainability Engagement, which is much more reflective of culture change and people’s connection with sustainability activities
  • Sustainability Research, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange has also been included within the scope of the University's key Environmental Sustainability Policy areas.
